A: We often listen to people speaking with such frustration about the number of meetings they attend on any given day. And the biggest gripe we hear is that the meetings often don’t seem to achieve very much. Many of the people we have worked with over time have said they wished decisions could be taken quicker so that teams were able to move to creating clear action plans that individuals could take forward confidently.
There are lots of reasons why meetings may not achieve much, but we often find meetings are not run in a way that gives the team a good chance of achieving its aims.
Simply put, the quality of meetings can be compromised if the people around the table are not all on the same page continuously. The quality of meetings can be compromised by a lack of the type of thinking leadership that supports a group to achieve results.
Some nifty ideas are to make sure that you know the real Purpose of the meeting, whether you are leading it or attending it, and to make sure that meetings are short and focused, using a meeting structure that everyone understands and can buy into.
Values-led meeting processes are key to getting the best out of people quickly. Bullying, undermining each other, not being prepared to contribute (emotionally or intellectually) and good old fashioned bad manners are not acceptable. Regardless of the urgency, complexity or gravity of a situation.
